Kennett native named associate vice-chancellor at Univ. of Ark.
Kennett native Karen Wheeler has accepted the position of associate vice-chancellor for policy, assessment, and diversity at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This comes as a culmination to a career of 20 plus years in the field of higher education."I became interested in the field of higher education about 25 to 30 years ago," she said.
According to a recent press release, Wheeler has held leadership positions with the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) for the past 14 years, most recently as Associate Director for academic affairs, a position she held for six years. While in this position, she worked with institutions proposing to add degrees or change programs and that of making recommendations to ADHE Coordinating Board. She comes to the position she now holds with experience at both four-year and two-year, public and private higher education institutions.
Wheeler spoke a little about the path that led to where she is today.
"One of my first professional jobs, actually, was Director of the Bootheel Education Center in Malden. I worked for Southeast Missouri State University. That was at the very beginning of that center, actually. It had been open for a year and I was the Director for three years and then moved to Arkansas from there and worked with the coordinating board in Arkansas," Wheeler noted, adding, "I have primarily worked [doing] a lot of national and state policy work and legislative work and was really interested in getting back on a college campus."
In the past, Wheeler has consulted on national college graduation efforts and was the state policy lead on many national career and college readiness initiatives.
