For an only child, a pet fills the role of a sibling
Dr Swali's own daughter nurtured a fear of animals-until he got her a pet. "She was not an animal lover before but now the two are inseparable," he says. "Children who have a pet at home become more responsible towards animals. They teach their classmates and friends never to hurt them. I have seen how it alters their personality in a wonderful manner. They do not feel the need to conform to peer groups and become more approachable and confident."Better exposed due to international travel and the internet, families today have expanded their choice beyond dogs and cats. Guinea pigs, turtles, hamsters, rabbits and exotic birds are making home across the city. "In fact, these species bring an awareness of unconditional love. Only the love of a dog is two-sided because it is an animal that reciprocates actively. With most other pets you cannot expect anything in return. Of course they will listen to you but that is all. Isn't that what unconditional love is?" Dr Swali says.
Puneet Bangera who runs an online store named Indian Petshop vouches for the sincerity with which children treat animals. "A vast majority own dogs and cats but there are a few who prefer exotic birds like macaws and African grey parrots, guinea pigs and rabbits," he says. "Children do not know much about pets when they buy them, but once they do, they source information from the internet and consult other owners and veterinarian doctors. They soon find that rabbits are messy to keep, guinea pigs are easy, and hamsters, in particular, are playful and easy to maintain."
Clinical psychologist Narendra Kinger, however, sounds a note of caution. He advocates pets for little children "only and only if they are willing to share the responsibility of looking after them". "There have been many cases where the parent has brought home a pet after a child promised that he would look after it completely, which is unrealistic by itself.
