P.D. James adds new twist to Jane Austen classic
An oral history can provide a unique perspective into a particular time and place, but it also gives rare insight into the person being interviewed. Understanding this, the newly widowed Jacqueline Kennedy and her brother-in-law Robert approved a series of oral histories about John Kennedy and his presidency. In September 1964, Mrs. Kennedy sat down with Arthur Schlesinger Jr., for seven interviews which spanned her marriage and her years in the White House. On the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's inauguration, these interviews were released. "Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life With John F. Kennedy" (973.922) is packaged with the CDs of each interview, as well as the complete text.
It has been six years since Elizabeth Bennet married Mr. Darcy and settled into his magnificent estate. Their two sons are healthy and happy, the Bennets and the Bingleys are doing well, and plans are under way for the Darcy's annual ball. All that changes, though, when Lydia, Elizabeth's disgraced sister, bangs on the door crying hysterically that her husband, Wickham, has been murdered. Mystery maven P.D. James adds her own inimitable ending to Jane Austen's classic story in "Death Comes to Pemberley" (M).
Paul Theroux' latest novel was actually published in Great Britain in 1969. "Murder in Mount Holly" is a short, farcical piece protesting the Vietnam War, but it still resonates today. It concerns college student Herbie Gneiss, who quits school in order to support his widowed mother. His job at Kant-Brake, a company that manufactures war toys for kids, brings him in contact with Mr. Gibbon, a veteran of three wars. In short order, Herbie is drafted and Mr. Gibbon falls in love with Mrs. Gneiss. Wanting to do something patriotic in honor of her son, Mrs. Gneiss, Mr. Gibbon, and their landlady, Mrs. Ball, decide to rob a local trust company, which is managed by a small, dark man they are convinced is a communist.
