Europe's mental health

Technische Universität Dresden, analysed 27 conditions using data, studies and surveys for the 27 countries of the European Union, plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The most common condition is depression. Over 30m people were affected by it, or 6.9% of the population. The second most frequent diagnosis is of specific phobias—such as of spiders. Those suffering from alcohol dependence are conservatively estimated at 14.6m, a considerably larger number than the 2.4m people with drug dependency issues (though some may suffer from both).

An old college friend of mine once told me he went into psychology because he wanted to help people and was fascinated by the challenge of navigating the unique maze that was each patient’s mind. Fifteen years later he says: “what we do all day is profile people during the first ten minutes of conversation, then we place them in one of two dozen pre-defined boxes.”

Generalized anxiety disorder? Give me a break.

Seriously. Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder where structures in the sufferer's airway, usually in the palate or esophagus, periodically become obstructed due to depressurization resulting in oxygen desaturation and consistent disruptions similar to choking which prevent sufferers from enjoying the important delta and REM sleep stages. The cause is usually a neck circumference greater than 17 inches(obesity). This does result in daytime fatigue and sleep deprivation which can lead to a myriad of physical and mental disorders, but the disease of sleep apnea itself is highly mechanical in nature and cannot possibly construed as a mental disorder.

Indeed, the treatments for sleep apnea are mechanical. The most effective treatment is the constant positive air pressure (CPAP) device which is essentially an air pump attached to a mask or canula around the nose or mouth that keeps the patients esophagus and soft palate pressurized and inflated throughout the night preventing these periodic obstructions. Oral appliances that tilt the palate open as well as surgical procedures are also treatments.

CPAP & negative ions. : Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

When I begin to slow up a couple of years ago the first thing I tried was a negative ion generator at my desk and beside my bed. It offered clear benefits in energy and mood. But life was not "all better" yet. After many months of extensive and sometimes quite invasive medical tests, I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I got a CPAP machine and I soon felt much better. But life was not "all better" yet. After three months on the CPAP my energy was still well below what it had been a year before. My negative ionizer was still sitting beside my bed and I hadn't given it any real thought. Then one day it dawned on me that with the nose mask on I wasn't getting any ions from the ionizer at night. I made a little adapter that went between my Respironics CPAP and my nose mask. I rewired the ionizer so that the injector plugged directly into my adapter so all the ions shot straight into the 6 foot tube to my nose. (6 feet is plenty for the ozone that is generated to dissipate.) After the first night on this gizmo, I noticed a significant energy increase the next day. A daily hike that consistently taken me about 2 hours and 10 min., took an hour and a half. In the subsequent two days was able to repeat that hike speed. In more recent hikes I have been able to add a 15 lb pack and maintain the same speed. I am getting markedly stronger by the day. Previous to integrating my ionizer into my CPAP, I was usually only able to do this hike every other day. Now, even with pack, I can do it daily I have only been using this thing 7 days but I am so impressed, I had to share my experience with other CPAP users. No, I'm not selling anything. If you like the idea your are going to have to build your own. It's a big-budget project.... about $.50 worth of 1 inch ID vinyl tube and a gear clamp from the hardware store. Though, you have to have a good ionizer to plug it into.
