Metairie man guilty of spraying Raid around neighbors' cat bowls
"We applaud Ms. Marino for installing the video camera on her porch," said Jeff Dorson, the organization's director. "Surveillance equipment is an important investigation tool that is helping (prosecutors) win more cases."
Rossi said he was trying only to eliminate the fleas that are attracted by Marino's cats, which he said number 15 to 20, and a possum that also feeds there. The cats were not harmed.
"All I was doing was spraying for fleas," said Rossi, who added this his two dogs caught fleas from Marino's felines. "I wasn't trying to kill her cats."
Marino, who lives in the 6800 block of Asher Avenue , put up the camera after twice detecting gasoline fumes in her front yard in May, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office incident report.
When she came home from work June 2, she noticed a chemical odor around her cats' outdoor food and water bowls and a film on the water's surface. She checked the camera recording "and was amazed to see her neighbor David Rossi ... spraying some type of spray all over her front door area and porch," the report says.
Deputy Olan Vining watched the recording and, with Deputy Jacob Parta, visited Rossi next door. When asked what he had sprayed at Marino's house, Rossi pointed to 17-1/2-ounce aerosal can of Raid Ant & Roach Killer on his counter, the report says.
They arrested him.
Prosecutors charged Rossi with cruelty to animals, criminal mischief and trespassing. But when Rossi pleaded guilty to cruelty Jan. 3 in Judge George Giacobbe's courtroom at 1st Parish Court in Metairie, they dropped the other two complaints.
Rossi was fined $384.
"We are ... glad that none of Ms. Marino's cats were harmed or killed by Mr. Rossi's criminal actions," Dorson said.
