Democrats Suffer Defeat on Home Turf
Democrats went 0-2 on Tuesday night election special House in New York and Nevada. The results, especially the anger of the GOP in New York, sending fear through the real Democratic Party of what can be done to prevent a similar disaster at the polls next November.
There are many important warnings of over-interpreting the results of special elections. They are unique (just look at the series of victories ahead of the Democratic shellacking 2010) and they are located.
However, special elections are also better reflect the overall policy environment currently. And unlike a snapshot survey, we get to see the actual voting behavior.
New York and Nevada results tell us that President Obama has a huge amount of work to do in the next 14 months to accomplish two monumental tasks: energizing the Democratic base voters and convince independents to return the Democratic Party. Democrats were unable to do either in the special election Tuesday to the House.
In New York, Republican businessman (and "The Jerry Springer Show" creator) Bob Turner defeated Democratic assemblyman David Weprin, 54 percent to 46 percent, in an area that was not represented by a Republican since the 1920s. It is the district that sent liberals like Geraldine Ferraro, Chuck Schumer and Anthony Weiner in Congress. For a Republican to win here, and to do so by 8 percent, is a strong criticism of President Obama, his party and its policies.
The New York Times reports on the early spin from each side:
"National leaders Republicans immediately trumpeted the victory as a sign of trouble for Mr. Obama's re-election effort." Unpopularity of President Obama is now a liability for Democrats in the country, representing Pete Sessions of Texas, the chairman of the Republican National Committee of Congress, said in a statement.
"But Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida representative, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, said concentration of Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of unusual and meant the race had some national ramifications.

First, I rarely talk about race, which may be a mistake, but I do not feel particularly well qualified. You see, I am an American of Norwegian descent with half my family comes from the north of the Arctic Circle. Moreover, being a small town guy, I did not have all that much contact.
But I know the difference between history and is in the classroom.
The fundamental reason for the founding of the Republican Party was to free the slaves of the period, full stop.
The party of Jefferson and Jackson, not so much. Yes, it's almost certain that Jefferson had a kid by his slaves, who may or may not be a big problem, I do not know, I was not there. I know that it was said in the ante bellum South as the only two things were a free white man and black woman. I'm just saying that there are many sides to this and we will never know the whole truth.
Jackson was a different story. I do not remember a story which was when he was running his slaves chained Natchez Trace, they were attacked, he took off their chains and armed them, when they beat the attack he has reversed the process and continued to March. I do not understand all this but then, like Lincoln, "that I would not be a slave, nor would I be a master."
The Democratic Party has always tried to play identity politics, if it was blacks, Irish, Scandinavian, unions, no difference if you voted Republican you were a traitor to your own. The Republicans have almost never been able to answer, at least in part, because of the belief that the color is not the man (or woman) character.
