Bill's Roundup: Sundogs!
Seasonal fuelwood restrictions go into effect today. The area around Mingus Mountain and portions of the Chino Valley and Bradshaw Ranger Districts are closed to fuelwood cutting through March 15th. Prescott National Forest officials note many roads are damaged during wet weather because they are not designed and maintained for all weather traffic. Driving on forest roads when they are wet can create road bed damage as well as soil erosion, watershed damage and often the establishment of new road segments. The restrictions will allow forest lands and roads to be protected from damage due to vehicle use during wet winter conditions.
Potential water quality improvements for Lower Miller Creek will be discussed during a meeting at 6 tonight. The Prescott Creeks and Ecosa Institute organizations are hosting a presentation on restoration opportunities for the Creek at the Ecosa studio, located off the alley behind Radio Shack on South Montezuma Street in Prescott. Ecosa has been working with the Watershed Improvement Council to bet ter understand the water quality challenges along the creek from Fair Street through West Granite Creek Park. Representatives note Granite Creek and its tributaries, including Miller Creek and Watson Lake are listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as impaired, or not meeting the minimum water quality. The presentation will include future plans for creating clean water in the area and learning about natural forms of pollution control.
The local Better Business Bureau is offering some tips on reviewing holiday advertisements and making purchases this holiday season. Examine the ad carefully for guidelines for the sale, determine if the item is available for a limited time and consider on sale or sale claims. A sale is defined as a temporary reduction from the usual price of an item. If the sales price is offered for more than 30 days, this becomes the regular price and the item should not be advertised as on sale. Look for clear end dates on any sale. Bureau officials add consumers should be careful with free offers. If anyone must make a purchase in order to receive the item advertised as free, that information should be disclosed in the ad. Prices for products and services can fluctuate, making it extremely difficult for businesses to claim their prices are lower than their competitors. Consumers should engage in comparison shopping to make sure they are getting the lowest price available.
