How to measure arousal effect of sound/music?
I am currently working on my thesis project about the role of arousing sound on facilitating players' memory recall while they are playing an emergency training game. The idea comes from neurobiology evidence that arousing stimulus (sound, picture, film) is remembered better than neutral stimulus. I have found the criteria of arousing sound in literatures and are now trying to create one. However, I am still not sure on how to validate my sound that it indeed have an arousing effect. In this case, by arousing I meant an intense feeling/sense of urgency. When working for clients the evaluation of the music I submit is very subjective and usually comes down to I like this or I don't like this. I'm counting on the client to be able to objectively evaluate the music I submit and ensure it meets the overall project's vision and direction as well as promoting my own vision of how the audio fits within the game. Sometimes everything falls into place and sometimes a compromise or secondary meeting is needed to make sure we're both on the same track. But it's subjective in nature. And in some ways I feel how music impacts players is also subjective. What works for some doesn't work for others, etc. I'm somewhat rambling but my point is I'm not sure many people have done the hardcore, scientific, data-driven tests on game audio like you're needed for your thesis.Howmusic Effects Your Mood - News

Music Affects Health | Newspanel
Try it yourself and be amazed at how listening to music affects your mood, concentration and performance. People respond differently to music particularly to the different genres. Some students, for instance, can study and focus when there is background music playing while they are studying. For others, they are disturbed and would prefer total silence. Some people can stay awake and become more active when music is played while they work, but others fall asleep and wake up when the music stops.
You may find these different reactions absurd but looking closely at these responses can reveal that music truly affects humans in a very unique way. In addition, music can affect the physical condition some people.
Mood
Undeniably, music touches the heart easily and it affects the listener’s emotions in many ways. A certain song may bring in pleasant and unpleasant memories. Love songs may either inspire a person when he/she is in love or push him/her to depression when he/she has been rejected or has lost a loved one. Since feelings are closely related to the physical condition an individual, it can dictate how the body functions. When you are sad you tend to become weak; and continued sadness will lower your desire for food and you will literally become physically weak until sickness overcomes you. You will notice that happy people are healthier than the melancholic ones. Since music can dictate a person’s feelings then it can indirectly affect his/her health.
Concentration
When you listen to music, you tend to focus on it whether on the melody, the instruments or the lyrics of a song. This tendency to focus will help you continue to do what you are doing. Have you ever wondered why music oftentimes accompanies certain physical exercises such as aerobics and gymnastics? Have you also observed that people who jog alone listen to music? These are simply some of the obvious manifestations that music indeed helps in keeping a person focused to stay physically fit.
