Sugarland, New York State Fair Grandstand fans, share plenty of emotions
On a tour earmaked to honor the many capacities of the human heart – "The Incredible Machine," as Sugarland titled its latest album – singer Jennifer Nettles and guitarist Kristian Bush took the big and boisterous crowd at the state fair grandstand Saturday night on a journey that touched so many emotions.
There were a couple of surprises to close this year’s grandstand series in big-time style. The first came from the crowd, and it was meant to pay homage to resiliency. When Sugarland began to play its song "Little Miss," thousands of fans held up signs containing lyrics to the song, lines like "I’ll be alright" and "I’m OK."
Courtesy of Syracuse country radio station WOLF, 6,000 signs were printed as part of the national Little Miss Project. Nettles was floored, and complimented the crowd for keeping the spoiler in the bag by not holding up the signs too early. She also thanked all for thinking of the people who died and were injured in Indianapolis in August, hours before Sugarland took the stage at the Indiana State Fair and high winds collapsed the grandstand stage.
The second surprise came from the band, and it was a generous move. Bush held up his acoustic guitar, and first Nettles and then he signed it with a flourish. Bush jumped down into the crowd and marched all the up a set of stairs at the back of the floor section to give the gift to a happy young woman.
There was plenty of happiness to go around, much thanks to Nettles' charisma and huge voice and Bush’s engaging ways and terrific guitar playing.
The crowd sang along when it wanted on favorites like "Stuck Like Glue," Settlin’ ‘’ and "All I Want to Do." When Nettles asked the crowd to sing special lines, she called it her "in-flight instruction."
When Nettles sang the gorgeous song "Baby Girl," joy was everywhere for her sign-off to the letter to her parents, "love, your baby girl."
There was humor, too, when Nettles told the crowd to look hard at her blow-dried hair because the night’s humidity would have it so very curly in a couple of songs. There was loyalty, as Bush donned a Yankees cap to much applause.
