Virginia I. Smith

Virginia Irene Smith, 97, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Elmcroft of Martinsburg.

Born May 18, 1914, in Webster County, she was the daughter of the late Porter Rutherford and Lenore Virginia (Weese) Rutherford.

She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Minnesota. She was a member of Phi Theta Phi and Alpha Tau Delta Sororities and the American Association of University Women.

Mrs. Smith was a registered nurse serving in the Navy Nurse Reserve during World War II. She retired as a professor at Shepherd College.

She is survived by close friends and caregivers, Cindy, Sara and Gary Santmier, of Martinsburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard G. Smith Jr.; one brother, Brannon V. Rutherford; and a stepsister, Marjorie M. DeBrucky.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at Brown Funeral Home's South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood with Chaplain Doug Knupp officiating. Entombment will be held at Mount Royal Memorial Park in Pittsburgh.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 at South Berkeley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Berkeley County Humane Society, 554 Charles Town Road, Martinsburg, WV 25405 or Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25403.

Barbecue for Books planned

SHEPHERDSTOWN -The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown is sponsoring a “Barbecue and Beer for Books” eventuality from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Bavarian Inn. It will underline live music, grill and special alien beers on draft. Tickets are $45 per person. Each sheet will be great for a dish and 3 beers. Proceeds will gain the Shepherdstown Public Library. Nonprofit encouragement organisation set for today

WINCHESTER, Va. -Members from “Daily Pain” will be at Walmart on U.S. 50 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Daily Pain is a nonprofit encouragement organisation that relies completely on open donations to sustain its programs, that help patients and their family groups pick up how to cope with incurable suffering illnesses, such as fibromyalgia, incurable tiredness set of symptoms and the chasm fight syndrome.

Silent auction to be hold Sept. 19

BERKELEY SPRINGS – The Humane Society of Morgan County is keeping its 33rd annual cooking discussion and wordless auction Sept. 19 at Cacapon State Park Lodge. Social hour starts at 5 p.m., followed by a short discussion and smorgasboard dinner, finale with a wordless auction. Cash club is available. Seating is paltry and advance booking deadline is Monday.

Benefit unison slated for Thursday

FALLING WATERS – Nashville recording artists James Wesley and Megan Mullins will be featured at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Harmony Methodist Church, 9455 Williamsport Pike. The uncover will gain the living donor follow-up hospital (University of Maryland Medical Center). Autographs and encounter and acknowledge will be existing after the show.
