Canisteo-Greenwood's 'valley of the chickens'
Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, home to mummified pharaohs and pyramids for more than 4,000 years, has more in common with the Valley of the Greenwood Chickens than anyone thinks.
The reason: Teacher Norma Bond’s sixth grade students at Canisteo-Greenwood Middle School.
The explanation is a bit longwinded: Remember those riveting movies where Indiana Jones and sweating archeologist friends pry open squeaking sarcophagus lids as flickering candles light shadowy tombs?
Dim scenes with appropriately spooky background music then reveal scary close-ups of wrinkled brown-skinned corpses dead for thousands of years. Abrupt staccato music strives to make you wet yourself as you stare at the shrunken visage of someone from the 11th Egyptian dynasty, a divine king or queen who lived 40 centuries ago.
The celluloid archeological team sweats and stares reverently, aware they are the first persons to view the mummies since entombment four millennia ago.
Familiar pyramids loom over millions of arid desert acres that serve as perfect background in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings for mummies laid to rest with what they presumably needed in the afterlife.
Think Hapshepsut or numerous Ramessses or Tutankhamen or Nefertiti or any number of ancient Egyptian leaders who gained eternal name recognition if not afterlife at the hands of embalmers thousands of years ago.
Some mummies became stars of museum displays around the world where long lines of gawkers thrilled to gap-mouthed dry corpses with brown irregular teeth and stunning gold jewelry.
Now fast forward to Bond’s sixth grade classes.
Indiana Jones those sixth graders and Bond aren’t: Southern Tier archeology involves burying chicken carcasses prepared with the same technique as ancient pharaohs: Think salt to leach away moisture and the addition of spices and oils.
Bond teaches middle school science and social studies. Chicken carcasses help sixth grade students learn zoology, ancient history, introductory biochemistry, arithmetic, comparative religion and patience. Four students share a carcass to learn mummification. The process takes a few weeks and, with 85 students in five classes this school year, more than 20 chickens.
