Landfill Search For Missing Indiana Student Begins – Nancy Grace ...
Bloomington police announced Tuesday that they have begun a search of a Vigo County landfill for evidence related to a missing Indiana University student last seen over two months ago.
The operation began around 7:00 am Tuesday and is expected to involve 20-30 officers each day from the Bloomington Police Department, FBI, Indiana University Police Department and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The âarea of interestâ is approximately 70â x 120â x 20â and the search may last up to two weeks.
Police Capt. Joe Qualters said in a press release that preparations for this search began within days of 20-year-old Lauren Spiererâs June 3 disappearance. He also pointed out that dumpsters in the part of Bloomington where Spierer was last seen were searched early in the investigation.
During the week of June 6, police worked with the company that operates the Sycamore Ridge Landfill to identify and isolate trash that was taken from Bloomington around the date of Spiererâs disappearance. According to the press release, that area has been secured since then with no additional waste placed there.
Preliminary steps were taken to search the landfill while volunteers continued ground searches in the 10-12 mile area around Spiererâs last known location and some rural areas that had been identified as possible disposal sites. Team Adam landfill search experts from the NCMEC have been working with investigators on an extensive search plan since early July. In addition to necessary personnel and equipment, they have also worked out transportation and logistical considerations for searchers.
Spiererâs family released a brief statement with Qualtersâ announcement on Tuesday.
âPlease keep all the members of the Bloomington Police Department and all other law enforcement agencies who are assisting in this incredibly complex undertaking to search the landfill safe,â Robert, Charlene and Rebecca Spierer said.
