Portage couple recalls 9/11 anguish in trying to reach daughter in New York City

PORTAGE — The first call yielded nothing, a sickening silence.

Art and Linda Nemitz had just arrived in Ireland for a two-week vacation, meeting up with friends Gene and Patti Wank. The foursome drove through the countryside, eventually stopping at a pub.

Then horror struck.

Images of smoke billowing from the tops of the World Trade Center towers, gashed and burning, filled the television screens in the pub. The Nemitzes’ youngest child, Julie, was working in New York City.

Patti Wank had a cellular phone that could make international calls. Frantically, she dialed Julie’s number.

With telephone lines in New York overwhelmed with traffic or destroyed, it took Wank several tries to get through. There was no answer.

Wank put her phone on automatic redial. For nearly an hour, Julie’s number was called over and over, each call either cutting out abruptly or not going through.

Art’s and Linda’s hearts pounded. Linda sobbed. And their thoughts wandered.

Was their daughter alive? Was she hurt? Would they ever see her again?

Finally, her voice

After the longest 45 minutes of their lives, the couple heard their daughter’s voice.

“It was a stroke of luck, but we got through to her,” said Art, who retired from Portage Public Schools in 2001.

“We didn’t have a lot of time with her, enough for her to say she was OK. But there was such a sense of overwhelming relief. I could feel it wash over me like someone poured a bucket of water on my head. And even though there was a lot of concern about what might happen, at least we knew she was all right.”

“I thought it was a miracle” they got through, Julie Nemitz-Madelung, 42, and now married, said in a telephone interview from New York.

Unlike other families who tried to get in touch with loved ones — and, sadly, never would — the Nemitzes were lucky. But Julie had few details about the attacks and wasn’t sure when she would be able to speak to her parents next.

Northern Lights Theater Pub | Look What's Happening in Salem

I have to admit that I'm not much of a movie goer. Okay, I'm not much of a movie watcher at all. To me, movies are an event. So when I do have time to see a movie I like the whole movie theater experience. Generally, I enjoy movies at Salem Cinema which is near my home, but last night I decided to go to Northern Lights with a friend. We really wanted to see The King's Speech and it was playing at Northern Lights. And at exactly the right time for our schedule!
