Pender County Humane Society plans series of events ...
That’s what they say at Pender County Humane Society, according to Treasurer Norma Troutman.
“When they’re picked up along the roadside,” the Carolina Beach resident said, “we rescue them in New Hanover County as well as Pender.”
The shelter has taken in animals from Brunswick County as well, she said. Group president Gloria Johnson hails from Wilmington.
In fact, several earmarks set PCHS apart. An independent group, they own a shelter. And the shelter is a no-kill facility.
“People always get us confused with Pender Animal Control,” Troutman said.
Animal Control, part of the Pender County Health Department, operates a shelter in Burgaw.
Pender County Humane Society takes animals out of Pender Animal Control to save them.
“We work really closely with them. They are a fantastic group to work with,” she said, “But we are a no-kill.”
PCHS adoption codes stand apart as well.
“One thing we do that is unique, we do a home visit for every animal that is up for adoption,” Troutman said.
PCHS requires a veterinary reference check on prospective adopters’ current and previous animals.
PCHS was founded in the 1970s. It closed, then regrouped after 1999 Hurricane Floyd left large numbers of homeless animals in its wake.
Troutman got involved around 10 years ago after reading a newspaper article. It said the humane society was about to close its doors for lack of funds and volunteers.
“And so I started carrying food up there. Gloria started walking the dogs,” she said, “and she and I met and sort of formed a bond.”
Troutman laughed.
“We mostly volunteer up there because it’s no-kill,” she said.
PCHS kicks off fall fundraising with its eighth annual raffle and a televised drawing for cash prizes totaling $2,000, which will air Sept. 9 on the Craig & Sheila Show, 6 to 7 a.m. on WILM-TV, and on Sunny 104.5.
