Port Vale loan signings relishing chance of first-team football
By Will Turner: Port Vale loan signings Shane O’Connor and Guy Madjo say the chance of first team football lured them to Vale Park.
Both players joined the Valiants on loan deadline day last week with O’Connor joining from Ipswich Town and Madjo coming from League One side Stevenage.
O’Connor admitted that he was never sure of his destination but is pleased to have the chance of some first team football.
“The manager spoke to me the day before on the Wednesday,” he said. “I wasn’t too aware of the situation.
“Just before I went out to training the manager [Paul Jewell] pulled me in and said you are going on loan to Port Vale – that was about the extent of the conversation.
“I missed that Saturday afternoon buzz, I’ve been playing with Ipswich for a while and playing in the reserves, but it just wasn’t the same.”
The 21-year-old told of his frustration at the current two-week break but is focusing on the positives.
He said: “You come on loan and you are eager to play, but you have got to go two weeks without a game.
“But I think it will help me settle into the club and get to know the players and management.”
However when the fixtures return O’Connor is confident in what he can bring to the first-team.
“I’m hoping I can come and add something,” he explained. “If I’m playing left back I can get up and down the line, I can overlap and I like to think I’m good with one on ones.
“I can match a lot of people for pace coming at me and I can offer a bit of quality going forward and try and make things happen.”
As for Madjo, the lure of first-team football was also his motivation for moving to the Burslem club.
“I want to play,” he said. “Sitting on the bench? There is no player who wants to do that and I want to start showing what I’m about.”
After lots of hard fitness work with his former club, Madjo hopes Vale can now reap the rewards.
