Vying for gluten-free fame

Madeleine Truax of Sandusky is located on the edge of the culinary glory, and, to borrow a phrase, is suspended from a moment of truth.

The time will come next month, when the winners of the Betty Crocker Gluten-Free Baker Challenge Recipe Contest have been announced.

Mrs. Truax was one of 10 finalists in the first contest, challenged the participants at the national level to develop a gluten-free holiday-themed drinks, bread or dessert with Betty Crocker mixes without gluten gluten-free mix or Bisquick.

Ms. Truax has chosen to make a dessert, but it was so most of the finalists.Its input is a devil cake with cherries and cream, and with a gluten-free devil food cake mix, it includes coffee granules, gluten-free cream cheese, mascarpone gluten free, gluten-free vanilla, cherry jam, powder sugar and butter. Lots and lots of butter.

Not only stiff competition, it includes another Ohioan, Holly Phillips of Stow, who made apple-spice cupcakes with maple cream cheese frosting and candied walnuts. Other challenges will come from a large chocolate cake chocolate chip ice box cakes and tiramisu.

The winner will be determined by online voting at GlutenFreely.com / BakersChallenge, where all the recipes and photos are also available. Votes can be issued once a day to Saturday, time is short if you want to vote for Ms. Truax or any of the other contenders are probably all good people, but do not live in Sandusky.

The winner will receive $ 5,000 and the chance to appear on a box of baking mix gluten. It's the equivalent of being a celiac box Wheaties.

This tradition carries on here with the celebration of the 21st Dozynki Harvest Oct. 16 at Franciscan Center Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd. in Sylvania. It is sponsored by the Toledo region of Poznan Alliance, which this year marks the 20th anniversary of the signing of a Sister Cities Agreement between Toledo and Poznan, Poland.

Mmm!! This is very yummy. I didn’t have any canned cranberry but I had a bag of fresh. So I made PW’s cranberry sauce (with orange juice instead of cran) and then used it to follow this recipe to a T. Even the extra orange juice. It is divine! Beautiful on the ham too! I used a half ham (6-7 pounds and reserved a 1/2 cup of sauce for the table. There is only two of us but if you are feeding more, you might go ahead and double the recipe. Thanks for a great one!
