The Stigma Fighter
Dr. Gabrielle Cerda job is to treat mental illness in children, but it is often found entangled with another enemy: the stigma.
Cerda, clinical director of outpatient psychiatry at Rady Children Diego San Hospital, deals primarily with the poor children who have public insurance or not at all and come to the hospital because they have nowhere where to go for treatment. She says many parents feel confusion and shame, especially if they come from other cultures where mental illness is not as common as it is treated here.
Cerda, a graduate of UCSD, who grew up in Chula Vista, battles also the world of medicine at large. She is a strong advocate for the rights of children with mental disorders and speaks to groups about how the system often leaves them without access to appropriate care.
In an interview, Cerda spoke about the conditions it sees, cultural barriers, it faces on the use and appeal of drugs as a quick fix.
What are the biggest problems that people come to you about?
Usually, people come for different kinds of behavioral problems - at home, at school. Many of these diagnoses turn out to be things like disorder of depression, anxiety and Attention.
What do you see more of these days?
Many autistic disorders and many maternal depression. My dream was to be able to treat the mothers of children I see, and months I was able to do on a small scale. If we treat the mother when it is appropriate, especially today where we have concerns about so many drugs and their effects on children, this can be an effective intervention to address the problems of children.
What do you see the poor children that you would not be if, for example, you were a child psychiatrist in La Jolla?
The diagnoses are probably not different. What's different resources to manage and for parents to take time off work, get them to treatment. Have money for a car, gas and transportation. Have money to pay for drugs. The other thing that is different is that these families often have less access to Internet resources and often have lower levels of education. It may be more difficult to fully understand what is happening with children. And they have less money to pay for tutoring or baby-sitters so they can come to visit.
