Acadiana Fly Rodders, Reel Recovery offer retreat
There are some compassionate people in this world, particularly among outdoorsmen.
Male cancer patients have an opportunity for a free three-day, two-night retreat for free in October, thanks to the Lafayette-based Acadiana Fly Rodders. The group has teamed with the national organization Reel Recovery to help men coping with cancer to join with other male cancer patients and learn fly fishing with volunteer casting coaches.
There will be free lodging and home-cooked Cajun food starting Oct. 11 at the White Lake Lodge in Gueydan. Space is limited, a spokesman said.

Louisiana Sportsman TV has been filming a redfish fishing segment at and around Marsh Island since Sept. 1.
The filming session was scheduled to end Thursday, according to Fran Thibodeaux, executive director of the Iberia Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau in New Iberia.
Another redfish segment is scheduled to be filmed Dec. 1-15 in Weeks Bay.
The program is sponsored by the Louisiana Tourism Coastal Coalition, which includes the IPCVB. The coalition was formed after the BP oil spill in April 2010 in an effort to mitigate any negative impact of the spill on the tourism industry, Thibodeaux said.
She said the coalition, comprised of coastal parishes’ convention and visitors bureaus, markets the state’s coast as a prime destination with a focus on outdoor activities, including fishing.

That was quite a bump the Atchafalaya River took at Butte La Rose as Tropical Storm Lee approached the coast of south central Louisiana. The river stage at Butte La Rose was in the high 4s for our Lipari Outdoors Adventures Hawg Fight Classic on Aug. 28 out of the new Myette Point Boat Landing. There were plenty of fish caught that day.
