Three-day event features more than 50 wild horses and burros up for adoption

After adoption, the federal government retains ownership of the horses for one year to make sure they are being properly taken care of and not immediately sold off. Potential owners must complete an application and typically must pay a $125 fee, though Hofman said that part is now negotiable. Dolly Rys and her daughter, Alicia, drove from their ranch in Liberal, Mo., where Rys trains horses and offers horse therapy sessions, to help people understand what they’re getting themselves into when they take on a wild horse or burro. Rys said she has adopted wild horses from ranches in Nevada — she adopted nine last year alone — and understands the process. Representatives from the BLM will be on hand to assist with the short application process, answer any questions and load horses. Financial aid will also be available.
