HORTENSIS: ROSES GROW ON YOU
Roses have been a garden favourite for ever and a day but they don't seem to be used much by designers any more. You hardly ever see them in the Show Gardens at The Chelsea Flower Show, which are mainly designed by men! It's all architectural plants or perennials and while there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, I'd like to see more roses used. Over the past year or so I have been trying to resurrect their use in my schemes and, so far, my clients (mainly women) have been very responsive to the idea, so I'm using them more and more, combining them with other plants for a mixed border effect a la Gertrude Jekyll. Since then David Austin Roses have produced a rose in their honour William and Catherine. The flowers are very beautiful, and befitting for such a handsome couple. It has classic shallow cup-shaped flowers that open a soft apricot colour, which quickly fades to cream and then to pure white. The overall effect is of white. Pure myrrh fragrance. Claire Austin (below) is a gem of a rose with pleasingly cupped buds of a pale lemon shade which gradually open to form large, creamy-white flowers. Strong myrrh fragrance mixed with meadowsweet, vanilla and heliotrope. It makes an arching shrub and an excellent climber, and for this reason David Austin Roses offer it as a shrub or a climber. It is also available as a standard. Be sure to specify when ordering. Gertrude Jekyll (above and below growing on the wall of RHS Plant Centre at Wisley) - aah Gertrude - what a heavenly scent she wafts. Tall and vigorous this rose is another contender for a specimen shrub or a short climber. She has perfect scrolled buds that expand into large rich pink rosettes that repeat well and have a strong fragrance. Harlow Carr (above) is another tough and healthy rose with strongly scented, pure rose pink flowers.
