Put gulf project in perspective
There exists an ambitious project, conceived by super-salesman Thaksin Shinawatra, to reclaim a long stretch of land off the Gulf of Thailand shore extending from Samut Prakan through Bangkok and Samut Sakhon to Samut Songkhram. The project is being promoted by the Pheu Thai Party, with the goal of reclaiming 300,000 rai of land _ 200,000 rai for public and 100,000 rai for commercial use. The commercial property would be used for resorts, with land to be sold for 20 million baht a rai. This development project would generate a huge amount of income, and an additional benefit from the project, according to the super-salesman, is that it would protect the shoreline from further erosion.
Many people are going along with the idea, but there are also many who oppose it, and this resistance has been both determined and persistent. The whole scheme gives the impression of a dream that is trying to be realised as a serious business plan, but thought up by someone who is not familiar with the area in question. The fact is that most of this land has already been devastated by various ill-conceived projects to the point where it must be carefully restored to ecological health, an undertaking that will take a very long time.
The entire coastal area of the Gulf of Thailand is muddy. In the past all of it, starting offshore and extending inland, was mangrove forest with canals of all sizes netting through it like a spider's web. These canals were also thickly grown with mangrove, and acted as a huge breeding ground for marine life. The natural rising and falling of the tide allowed sea animals to come and go. Some animals fed on others, larger ones eating smaller ones, creating a naturally sustained balance.
The gulf's health and abundance in for mer times are attested by documents and spoken accounts by the people who used to live there. Fishermen would lower their nets to catch mackerel and also bring up plenty of crabs. They didn't know what to do with them: if they brought them to market the price would be so low that it wasn't worth the effort, so they chopped them up and fed them to the ducks. The mangrove formed a natural barrier and prevented the shore from being washed away by the sea, as is happening now.
