Maestro manrat given stirring tribute
Family and friends in music circles paid tribute to maestro Manrat Srikaranonda recently with a charity concert that featured highlights from his lifetime of work, which includes some of Thailand's all-time favourite songs. Music was also their way of saying happy birthday to the beloved 83-year-old National Artist and his wife Mrs La-orwan, 65, who shares the same birthday in the month of August.
Judging from the big grin on Manrat's face, he could have asked for no better birthday gift.
Apart from the performances from the musical Srikaranonda family, led by the couple's two children who are both ace musicians, Indhuon and Pathorn, the happy occasion also featured well known names in the music industry such as Nadda Viyakarn, Wipoo Kumnerddee, Wichanee Piaklin, aka Gam the Star, Pongsatorn Supinyo, aka Dew the Star, and the three Srinarong siblings Paye, Parn and Pui of the popular Vie Trio. Joining the 11-piece band were a group of seasoned musicians to pay tribute to the man who popularised big band music in Thailand.
In line with the legendary musician's youthful spirit, the concert at the small auditorium of the Thailand Cultural Centre started with the upbeat rhythms of the Thai Drums Group and the Drum Zeed Group of the Royal Thai Air Force Band, followed by the big band's rendering of Manrat's Rak Oey, one of Thailand's best known love songs. Then the singers took turns in crooning the numbers that traced the National Artist's lifetime career.
The gems included Song in the Mist, which Manrat penned while studying in Boston, Krai Oey (Who's the One?), which he wrote for his wife La-orwan, and several other of Manrat's hits, such as Jai Oey (Oh, Heart), and Chua Fah Din Salai (Forever).
Despite his frail health, the maestro joined his family to sing Kanueng (Reminiscing). His late father, a Portuguese musician, wrote the melody, which Manrat knew by heart before he later wrote verses for it. Manrat's father inspired a love of music in all of his children. To welcome the audience into this extended musical family, the Srikarakondas and their relatives also took to the stage to delight spectators with their various musical talents. No one could stop smiling when one-year-old Indre, Manrat's youngest granddaughter, enthusiastically shook her maracas to the fun-filled tunes of his Jab Poo Dam (Catch the Black Crabs), a popular children's song. Son-in-law and ace pianist Artas Balakauskas delighted the audience when he crooned the melancholic tune Jai Oey in flawless Thai. Son Pathorn also gave a pleasant surprise and shared a happy family moment with the audience when he popped the question to his fiancee, Nantarat Kongkapet, during one of the love tunes.

In India, people are still used to calling Hero Honda and probably will be calling them like that forever. That is the power of brand names that make a difference in selling a product here. People have always believed in Hero Honda as theyâve been providing good performing and fuel efficient bikes for a while in India now. Letâs forget about bikes for a second here and talk about scooters. The rise of the scooter market in India is quite phenomenal. With the introduction of superbikes in a developing country like India with high profile jobs on the rise and people not giving second thoughts on the price, it is surprising that scooter sales have shot up in the market. Perhaps, the idea of a gear-free decent ride with good pick up and valued fuel efficiency is the reason behind its success. Weâve seen the Kinetic Honda sell like crazy for many years until they stopped production and were taken over by Mahindra. The idea is basically to understand what people want and hence progress that way and come up with products to suit the demands.
The Hero Group meanwhile have unveiled their new avatar by calling themselves Hero MotoCorp. Their alliance with Honda ends here with Honda still agreeing to aid Hero until 2014. The mega event to introduce themselves was held in London. The event was a big one in that many celebrities were invited to mark the occasion. This means a lot of thought is given to the safety of the rider. This brake system is also found in scooters like Honda Activa.
